Minuteman conference draws 200

Border security, enforcement against illegal immigration and activism against amnesty for illegal aliens were the focus of a conference Thursday hosted by the Central Coast chapter of the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps.
Titled “Government failure and illegal immigration — Does rule of law matter?” the event featured a panel of four guest speakers who talked about what is working to stop the flow of illegal immigrants across the border and what more needs to be done.
More than 200 people attended the event at the Santa Maria Inn.
The Minuteman Civil Defense Corps is a volunteer group dedicated to stopping illegal border crossings into the United States. From Paso Robles to Santa Barbara, the Central Coast chapter has 75 active members.
Paula James, leader of the Central Coast group, said she was pleased by the turnout and the feedback from attendees, many of whom were new faces.
“I really believe this is a new group of people who are learning,” James said. “It’s about educating the public to issues that need to be dealt with in a real debate — the pros and the cons.”
James and others of the Minuteman group have repeatedly urged Santa Maria officials to allow city police to enforce federal immigration laws.
